“I’ve got a golden ticket!”

We only announced the lineup for this year’s Yay! YA a few hours ago, and I’ve now just been informed that the Box Office phone hasn’t stopped ringing all day. Hurrah. That’s 80 places out of 200 gone. If you want your school involved in this AMAZING event, then book soon. All schools need to pay for is their transport. Pupils should buy books, but who are we to tell anyone what to do? Bring a packed lunch too. Heck, I might even try to arrange a tuck shop!

Please promote Yay to everyone and tell your librarian pals about it.

Class of 2016!

Yay Logo

Cumbernauld Theatre is delighted to welcome Yay! YA+ Scotland’s first ever teenage book festival, a day of events completely dedicated to Young Adult books. This will be the second year the event has been held at the Theatre after a successful day in 2015. Kirkland Ciccone, Catalyst Book Award Winner 2014 and author of fiction for teenagers, curated a sold-out festival which celebrates both teen fiction and the authors who write it.

This free event is open to every school in Scotland on a first come first served basis, providing they can travel to Cumbernauld Theatre. The lucky school librarians and pupils will have the opportunity to meet and experience authors in a live setting. The event will take place 21st April 2016.

The authors in this year’s line-up include international best-sellers, award winners, new talent, and established names. They are Elizabeth Wein, Catherine MacPhail, Estelle Maskame, Kirkland Ciccone, Roy Gill, Alex Nye, Victoria Gemmell, and Alexander ‘Skald’ McCall.

Kirkland said ‘After the success of last year’s event it was only a matter of time before I got together with Cumbernauld Theatre to plan a second event. We had over 200 pupils from 11 schools in Scotland. School librarians and libraries are so important in what we do. Sadly they’ve never been in so much danger from unjustifiable budget cuts. So just like last year, this event is free for schools. All they need is bus fare, a packed lunch, and spending money for books. I’ll probably end up naming my first hernia after this event!’

‘The quality and diversity in the YA genre has never been better. We wanted to reflect that in this year’s line-up. There is something for everyone at Cumbernauld Theatre on 21st April. The emphasis will be on live readings and performance. Yay! YA+ is a completely unique literary day out.’

There will be a book shop set up in the Theatre on the day of the Festival courtesy of Scotia Books, which will enable pupils to purchase books from the attending authors and also get them signed.

A bookshop.

A unique experience.

A celebration of Scotland’s Teen Reads Scene.

Yes, it’s nearly that time of year again. Last year 200 pupils from secondary schools around Scotland attended the very first Yay! YA+ and the feedback was so good we’re doing it again.

Keep an eye out for the big announcement. Support your favourite YA authors. And make sure you have money to get your school bus in gear.

We Are Yay! YA+

At last! We can talk about it! No more keeping it secret!

Young Adult fiction is amazing.  Kid Lit is amazing.  And literary festivals?  AMAZING.  So why not combine them all into a glorious day of live events? Think of Yay! YA+ as a Live Aid of amazing authors, except Bob Geldof won’t be asking for your money. Yay! YA+ is the first festival in Scotland to be dedicated to YA fiction. And why not? YA novels at this moment in time are massive, and they deserve respect.  And that is what Yay! YA+ is going to do in April.  We hope this day is similar to the successful YALC event recently held in London.

Yay! YA+ (the plus sign is silent!) is going to be a day packed full of live events.  We have an array of amazing authors, some of the best talent in the YA genre, as well as a few Kid Lit authors thrown in to make the event extra special. Yay! YA+ will have live panels, creative writing workshops, signings, and unique author events you won’t see anywhere else.  The best thing about Yay! YA+ is that entry is FREE.  The only money pupils will need is cash for the tuck shop and books.

Yay! YA+ is open to every single school in Scotland, providing they can reach Cumbernauld Theatre safely.  Seats will be given out on a first come first served basis; tickets must be booked in advance of the day.

The age range for this event is Primary 7 to Third Year pupils only. This means we have pupils who are the target age to read YA books, but also a good selection of pupils who are about to graduate onto teenage books. We have something for all readers at Yay! YA+.

Yay! YA+ takes place on Friday 24th April 2015, 10.00 -14.30

The schedule of events will be up online very soon.

Our new Twitter account will be up and running soon, and Cumbernauld Theatre will have information to give out soon.  So please, please, please bookmark this site. If you are a school librarian, please get behind this event!

Thank you.

IMPORTANT: If you want to book pupils from your school, you need to get permission. Staff supplied by North Lanarkshire Council has been disclosed for safety. Cumbernauld Theatre will take bookings. If you can’t get spaces for your pupils, you will be put onto a list and informed if a school drops out.

If you don’t turn up, please give us adequate warning so we can get another school to take your place.  Absentee schools will be ineligible for a space next year.

If you have anything you would like to ask, just CONTACT us here at Yay! YA+ and we’ll get back to you as soon as possible.
